BIO

In a land of shifting light and restless tides, where wool has for centuries been spun into warmth and memory, Halla Lilja Ármannsdóttir knits stories with thread. A textile artist deeply rooted in knitting, she has been intertwined with yarn since childhood – her fingers learning the rhythm of stitches like notes on a piano.

In 2018, she moved to London, where she studied textile design at London College of Fashion. There, she immersed herself in the alchemy of textiles – both machine and hand knitting – and discovered the delicate strength of Icelandic horsehair. She graduated with honours in 2021 and returned home with her craft – to her roots.

The world began to notice. In 2022, Halla’s work was featured in the Danish television program Feldthaus og Bagger: taber masken, later shown on RÚV in 2023. She has twice participated in Design March, exhibited at Handverk og Hönnun, and contributed to the implementation of a digital knitting machine at the Icelandic Textile Center. In the summer of 2024, she held her first solo exhibition, Samhljómur, at Kirsuberjatréð, before travelling to Slovenia to teach and share her craft with the O2oop textile group.

For Halla, knitting is more than a technique – it is a conversation with time itself. She stretches the boundaries of tradition, blending past and future, soft wool and rigid horsehair, mechanical precision and human touch. Her work echoes those who came before – and whispers to those yet to follow.
